This collection is named, Tionnhéhkwen, which means Our Sustenance in Kanien’kéha. This collection honors the fall equinox and the marking of the beginning of harvest of some traditional foods. In this collection, I wanted to honor and remember those who have come before me and what they sacrificed so that I can live, so that I can experience beauty and thrive. There is a lot of conversation surrounding Indigenous rights + these are vital conversations. As much as we talk about these issues, we must also talk about Indigenous joy and celebration. This collection is a celebration of our beauty as exactly who we are as modern Indigenous people. Niá:wen!
To create space for more light to be shed on Indigenous joy, 10% of the sales of this collection will go to an Indigenous creative or entrepreneur scholarship.
A special niá:wen (thank you) to Gus LeSavage for his talent in photographing this collection and overflowing love and support + Mai Moua at the Sew What tailor shop for her assistance and skills in helping in the reworking process of these vintage treasures + to the Covet Fashion team for their encouragement, flexibility, and talent. Niá:wen for this opportunity. -Alyssa
